Diseases

Freshwater prawns are not susceptible to viruses common to marine or penaeid shrimp.  However, they can become infected with several different diseases.  Disease has never been a problem with the freshwater prawn industry.  Some links are provided which provide further information on diseases of freshwater prawns.

Freshwater Prawn Industry in Illinois

The freshwater prawn industry in Illinois has experienced rapid growth in the last four years.  Some of the reasons for success have been proper education of growers by Shawnee Community College and the formation of the Shawnee Freshwater Prawn Growers Association.  This combination has provided growers with the necessary knowledge and training to successfully produce and market freshwater prawns in Illinois.
